Our Story

The Crooked Lakes Livestock and Grain operation was born in 2005 north east of Morrin in the province of Alberta, growing a variety of crops and raising around ninety head of cattle. The farm land we now call home has been cared for by our family since 1911.

Today we continue to grow crops, but have expanded our beef cattle herd to one hundred and ninety head. The farm is run by Tracy and Melanie Nelson and their children Lowell and Quinn, who are fifth generation farmers. In the early 2000’s we started feeding two to three steers for our own consumption and for a few close friends. Since then, we have expanded this business to feeding over twenty five steers, with minimal advertising. Our growth has come from our customers, sharing Nelson beef at their dinner table.

Our Mission

Our mission is to produce high quality, tender, and nutritious beef for our customers that is grown ethically and sustainably. We are enrolled in the Verified Beef Plus Production Program (VBP+), which works to ensure members are accountable, transparent and producing quality beef. By meeting and exceeding these production standards, that monitor animal care, biosecurity and stewardship of the land, we take accountability for all of our own practices. The health of our cattle and the happiness of our customers is priority over our bottom line.

This lifestyle isn’t just about animals It’s about beliefs and values passed down through generations. Ensuring things are left better for those yet to come. It’s all about Legacy.”
