The Nelson Family

The Nelson family, Lowell, Melanie, Tracy & Quinn. The fourth and fifth generations carrying on the legacy of the Cosens Farm.

1911

In 1910, Ralph Cornelius Cosens filed a claim on South 1/2 9-32-19 in the Morrin District. He held this claim for one year, but decided not to relocate from his farm in Carstairs. In 1911, his son Edmund Ralph Cosens filed on south 1/2 9-32-19 and retained it until 1918 when his father Ralph decided to sell his land in Carstairs and move the rest of his family to the Morrin District. He bought the South East 1/4 9-32-19 from Edmund. Ralph built a house, barn and other buildings on the property.

In 1919, Stanley Roy Cosens, the sixth of ten children born to Ralph purchased land in the Morrin District. In 1920, he sold his initial purchase to buy the Hudson Bay Land located on the South East 1/4 8-32-19. Stanley built a house and resided here until 1963. In 1925, Ralph passed away and Stanley took over farming the South East 1/4 9-32-19.

In 1963, Stanley’s son Roy married Mary Elizabeth Johnson and moved to the farm. They had three children, Belinda, Jason and Melanie . Jason farmed for about ten years and in 1999 he decided to sell his land. Melanie and her husband Tracy Nelson purchased Jason’s land and in August of 1999 they moved to the farm.

The Cosens farm has been passed down through four generations and the fifth generation is now part of the operation. The farm has increased in size with every generation purchasing land in the Morrin District and adding value to the existing operation.
